At the age of 9, Madeena is one of our youngest athletes to be recognized as an ASIYA Athlete. Madeena started participating in track and field at the age of 6 and now competes in long jump, shot put, open races and as part of a relay team. She recently took up the sport of basketball as well.
When asked what she loves about sports, Madeena said I love to compete, try new things especially meeting and competing with so many different types of kids. I also enjoy track meets because we get to travel, see new places and meet new people. And my coaches are really nice and care about me so much.
Madeena doesn’t feel that being a Muslim athlete has been challenging for her because she feels she is able to do everything everyone else does but she wears a hijab while doing it.
When asked about her ASIYA sports hijab, she said I love the ASIYA sports hijabs because they are comfortable and cool. When I am wearing one, it feels like it’s not even there. It’s much more comfortable than a two piece cotton hijab and also more comfortable than the Nike Pro hijab.
Madeena’s favorite coach is her mom because she is always there for her and she encourages her to do her best. Her mom often reminds her that she can do anything she puts her mind to.
She admires Ibtihaj Muhammad because she never gives up and worked hard to win a medal in the Olympics while wearing a hijab.
We wish Madeena much success as she continues to grow her love of sport and as another trailblazer for young girl athletes wearing hijabs.
